Vigil with the Blessed Sacrament
Maundy Thursday: All Night Vigil with the Blessed Sacrament
On the night before he died for us, Jesus brought his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane and said to Peter, James, and John, "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me" (Matt. 26:38).
Each year on Maundy Thursday, after the solemn liturgy of the Lord’s Supper, we are invited to keep watch with Christ in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The Mary Chapel will remain open through the night, offering a sacred space for prayer, silence, and devotion.
This vigil is an opportunity to enter more fully upon the contemplation of those mighty acts whereby Christ has redeemed us, to enter into the mystery of Christ’s Passion. As we stay in his presence and watch with him, we recall his agony in the garden, his lonely watch, and his willingness to take up the cross for the salvation of the world.
In the quiet hours of the night, we join our prayers to his, offering our love and sorrow, our longing and hope, in union with his sacrifice. This vigil is both an act of devotion and a response to his love—a love that endured betrayal, suffering, and death to undo death.
We hope to have at least one person present with the Blessed Sacrament throughout the night into the early hours of Good Friday, so we invite you to sign up for an hour or two. Whether in silence, with scripture, or in quiet prayers, come and keep watch with Jesus as we prepare our hearts for Good Friday.
