From the Organist & Choirmaster
A few weeks ago was my second anniversary of serving as organist and choirmaster at Saint Andrew’s. There have been many days that I’ve driven to the church during the week and turned the corner to see the beautiful brownstone church perched atop the hill on the corner and upon simply seeing Saint Andrew’s, I reflect on how much I love my job. I’m so happy to serve at this wonderful parish and look forward to doing it for years to come. You are all a blessing in my life.
Before coming to Saint Andrew’s, I was at Saint Luke’s in Mountain Brook singing in their choir and assisting the organist. Then I was called one day by Mtr. Rebecca DeBow who asked if I would consider becoming organist and choirmaster of Saint Andrew’s, I was in some ways reluctant but followed through with a conversation with her that led to an audition and interview. I was so nervous but was met with incredible questions, conversation, and an incredible organ as well. I was impressed at the size of the organ, I still am.
My first Sunday came, which was Rally Day 2022, so the fall programs had kicked off, there was a fish fry, incense, and beautiful liturgical expressions. Things went on steadily, our first feast day came, All Saints’ Day, a particular favorite of mine. In choir, Elin mentioned to me there’d be a solemn procession and I had no clue what she was talking about. I’m beyond grateful for her guidance and wisdom every day.
Since then we’ve hired our 18th Rector, Fr. Peter who is a constant source of knowledge and wisdom. I couldn’t ask for a better boss and companion.
The music program has also pursued and done incredible things, a concert series in 2023, the establishing of four lay-clerks, a UK residency, and now a brand new ministry, The Center for Anglican Music with its choral scholar program. I never knew my dreams as a college student would come true this quickly, so I thank everyone at Saint Andrew’s for supporting, guiding, and loving myself, it never goes unnoticed.
To more years of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the Altar in in the Street!
