From the Organist & Choirmaster
This Sunday at 5:15 pm in the Nave, we have the privilege of welcoming John Lowe, Organist and Director of Music of our neighboring parish, Saint Mary’s on the Highlands. He will play Mendelssohn’s sixth organ sonata, a firery piece that I enjoyed learning and playing for a recital while I was at Samford. Lowe will also play for the service of Choral Evensong which will feature Francis Jackson’s Evening Service in G, one of my favorite sets of Evening Canticles and one the parish choir has worked very hard to prepare. Francis Jackson who lived to be 104 years, passing away in January of 2022, was the organist, choirmaster, and composer at York Minster for 36 years; he served as president of the Royal College of Organists, officer of of the Order of the British Empire for services to music, and was aware many academic degrees throughout his life. Dr. Jackson’s Evening Service in G is brilliant and shows off Dr. Jackson’s skill in the modern 20th century British style of church music. Other music will include:
Parry - My soul, there is a country
Bainton - And I saw a new heaven
Hymn 141 - Wilt thou forgive that sin which I begun
I do hope you will join us Sunday Evening for March’s offering of Choral Evensong. All are welcome!
